Emira’s environmental stewardship began in 2011 with our first public carbon disclosure through CDP. This commitment has grown into a 14-year journey of measurable progress. Today, sustainability is not just a practice but a core pillar of our operations, driven by innovation, accountability, and a vision for lasting impact.

Key milestones in our environmental journey include:

Prioritized upgrades to lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (“HVAC”) systems, and electrical infrastructure
Introduced renewable energy solutions in 2013, beginning with solar photovoltaic (PV) installations
Became the first African company to receive Science Based Targets initiative (“SBTi”) approval for carbon reduction targets

Our strategy has evolved from carbon reduction to a more holistic approach to sustainability with a focus on resilience. Sustainability embedded in Emira’s operations through:

Energy security – Through the implementation of efficiencies and renewable energy. Targeted efficiency upgrades from LED technology, HVAC and smart metering systems. Renewable energy adoption through the installation of solar PV farms. Ensuring business continuity through backup systems to combat grid instability.
Water stewardship – Water metering, efficiency, awareness and harvesting initiatives.
Waste Management – A continued focus on increasing waste to landfill diversion rates and improving recycling across our direct operations.
Biodiversity & Land Use – Implementation of various initiatives in the portfolio where feasible such as the beehive project and indigenous planting.
