Eskom woes fuel moves to switch to private power

Companies turn to generators and solar panels

AS the cost of Eskom’s electricity rises and frustration with load-shedding increases, companies are forking out millions to generate their own power – and even cemeteries are turning to renewable energy.

JSE-listed property group Calgro M3 is launching a new business – private cemeteries – later this month and has spared no expense to be independent of the grid.

Chief financial officer Wikus Lategan said R15 million had been committed towards using gas and solar energy to power a cemetery at Nasrec, Johannesburg, that will accommodate 39 000 graves…
